Massachusetts Department
of Revenue Expands Tax Registration Service
Under a cooperative federal-state program, Massachusetts
Department of Revenue (DOR) now offers complete "one-stop" tax
registration service for new businesses. When business owners register
for Massachusetts tax accounts, they can also obtain a Federal Employer
Identification Number (FEIN).
"We are pleased to provide our business taxpayers this additional
service," said Frederick A. Laskey, Commissioner, Massachusetts Department
of Revenue. "When the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offered us the
chance to assign FEINs to our Massachusetts taxpayers, we agreed immediately.
We see the ability to assign the FEINs as a natural extension of the services
we offer new businesses." This new service is available in six DOR
locations throughout the state.
Applying for a FEIN is one of the first steps in starting a business.
Owners need a FEIN to open bank accounts, make federal employment tax
deposits and file federal tax returns. Last year, the IRS processed over
44,000 FEIN requests for new Massachusetts businesses. The DOR handles
registrations for Massachusetts sales and use tax, employer income tax
withholding, corporation, partnership, and fuels taxes.
To obtain a FEIN, business owners must complete Federal Form SS-4, Application
for Employer Identification Number, available from the IRS or DOR. FEINs
may be obtained at the following DOR locations, Monday through Friday
from 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
